Once upon a time there
was a little white ball, little white ball. Very sad because he was a little
white ball, little white ball. Getting dispatched to all parts of the ground
was a little white ball, little white ball. Try as I might, I can’t
draw parallels between Tommy Steele’s bittersweet homage to a brave little
white bull, trying to overcome the prejudices of a black bull dominated sport
in 1950’s Spain and the FFTMCC visit to long time opponents Wootton and Boars
Hill. The white bull did eventually triumph to become one of the best little
bull’s in Spain, although without digging deeper this would appear to be akin
to being one of the bravest little turkeys in Norfolk in the run up to
Christmas. To draw a line under a
rather tenuous link, the game was conducted with a white ball and no bulls
were harmed in what was a pleasant contest. Duck watches Emerson and Westmoreland open up for
a combined total of 2 runs. Stand in T20 skipper D
Emerson (2) lost the toss, but was not unhappy in being asked to bat first.
Doing as any fine skipper does and placing his trust in himself, he opened
the batting with Westmoreland (0). Along with Smith (1) they got off to a
dreadful start and at 9 for 3 after 6 overs if it had been a boxing match it
may well have been stopped at this point. W&BH mixed up the bowling using
nine different bowlers to keep the scorers very busy. R Turner (25 off 41
balls) came in to steady the ship, who along with our schizophrenic number 5,
took the score to 34. Here is our number
five’s innings in full: Geoff, Geoff, Geoff, Geoff, Geoff, Geoff, Geoff,
Geoff, Geoff, Geoff, Geoff, Geoff, George, George, Geoff, Geoff, George,
Geoff (10). The revelation of the
innings was Howarth (51 n.o. off 32 balls) who,
after a ropey start really got stuck in to the assorted bowling. Four sixes,
including a monster into adjacent gardens equals his own MAD record. It was a tonic for those watching to
finally see a Mad batsman find the middle of the bat and points hopefully to
better things to come this season. He was very ably assisted by Hotson (8 n.o off 5 balls) who demonstrated some really nice
strokeplay including a cracking 4 off his first ball. “Nice one, Spam – good slog.” 113 was considered a
decent total which should ensure a pleasant contest in the warm evening
sunshine. High points were that we batted through
and that Pearson remembered we had a game this evening. Reeves (3-0-19-0) and
Roberts (4-0-28-0) opened the bowling. Neither bowled badly, but were really
little match for the W&BH openers who were intent on going for everything
on or off the stumps. Emerson tried manfully to muster his troops,
experimenting with several variations of field placings, but the openers continued
to find gaps and the score raced along. Smith (1-0-17-0) and Pearson
(1-0-9-0) fared no better than the openers and again the white towel was
readied. Only Hoskins (4-0-27-3) really asked any questions of the batsmen.
One of those questions was ‘do we have someone at cow corner who can catch?’
The answer was ‘yes’, as Roberts took a good one at chest height which had
come to him flat and fast. Edge of your seat stuff…. Finally Howarth
(1-0-8-0) and Emerson (2-0-15-0) confirmed that 7-8 runs per over was there
for the taking as W&BH glided to their total to win by 7 wickets. It was
then handshakes all round and a beer or two as the sun went down. ‘Reevsie’
