We gathered once again
for the almost weekly contest of cricket and banter between the FFTMCC and
Wootton and Bladon. Despite a threatening forecast, Dan had left the decision
‘up to you guys’ and so after a string of missed Sundays, the match was very
much on. During the usual
incompetent warmup where players demonstrate to the opposition that they can
neither catch or throw, Geoff was sent scurrying down the side of the
pavilion between some parked cars and under a very large oak tree to retrieve
a wayward ball. To a collective shout of nnnnooooo,
he attempted to hurl the ball back to the assembled players with one of his
underarm specials. The loudest shout came from John Harris, realising that
his mini was vaguely in the proximity of Geoff’s intended trajectory. Too
late, yes inevitably the ball went more up than out, into the leaves of the
tree and down again. I didn’t hear the distinctive sound of leather on car
bodywork, but by observing the general amusement it must have landed either
on or very close to John’s motor. With the MAD moment safely in the bag it
was out on to the field to start the match. Here, Geoff throws one away from John’s car. The game was decided by
a young dashing left hander. Not in the favour of the FFTMCC unfortunately,
as their left hander is neither young nor dashing. It was opener A Horne for
W&B with a wonderful 87 not out that did it. Things were looking really ominous early on when he smashed an enormous six
off a free hit. He calmed down a little after that but was really a class
above. This could be yet another match report that descends into a discussion
on ringers and it is a little difficult to take when a guy nobody has seen
before is clearly a cut above, but apparently he’s a
good sort and fits in both on and off the pitch. The FFTMCC bowling was
opened by Rodney and Green. This according to the W&B scorebook, a work
of fiction where the batting total, bowling total
and cumulative runs total provided three differing values. 171 was the
average and generally accepted total. Pick of the bowlers was
Darley (Rodney) who toiled away against the openers before coming good in the
final two balls of his seven over spell to dismiss A Hambridge, then the
talented ‘Nicko’ for a golden with the ball of the
day, meaning he’ll be on a hat trick with his first ball on tour. The two
spinners Hoskins and Timms chipped in with a brace each and the
ever-dependable Rundle also got one. Timms under the watchful gaze of Umpire
Hambridge. The back story to this
game was the presence of James C Bateman (digger) for the MAD. James is a
recent addition and despite his age (Geoff for one being old enough to be his
grandad, no kidding) he has fitted straight in. He had previously turned out
for W&B and upped the ante by wearing his old shirt from his time with
them. He spilled a very difficult chance in the field, which of course they
loved, but fair play to W&B for giving him a guard of honour as he came
out to bat. Special mention to Jake
who was behind the stumps today. The lad has worked on his keeping and is now
coming good. A real talent for the future he took a smart catch off Rodney
and conceded zero byes despite the usual wayward legside bowling on occasion.
A thoroughly deserved Man of the Match. Keeper Hotson sees one beat Valentine’s bat. For the reply Darley
strode out to umpire, stating his intention to be miserly with LBW decisions.
So, no LB’s then Darls. Alright, so more LB’s after
triggering Webster (3). Come on now seriously Mr D, after sending Geoff (0)
packing. He was forcibly replaced shortly after. The MAD needed someone
to build the reply around and Turner (30) did his best to provide that.
Needing 50 off the last seven overs we were still theoretically in with a
shout, but the tail never wagged, 131 (at least we’re better at counting) all
out. Back to the pub for a
bit of beer and chat. We get W+B and they get us, long may it continue, just
don’t go finding any more talented left handers. ‘Running Failure’
