In all sporting arenas
consistency is key. Maintaining that level of performance over several games
over a prolonged period of time, it’s what separates the men and women from
the boys and girls, and of course the millennial gender fluid type of person from
the... whatever the lesser of that is. After this Wednesday’s performance in
Kidlington on the back of the trip to Islip at the weekend, it would appear
the Far from the MCC have absolutely nailed it. Sunday was truly woeful, but
here at Stratfield Brake, The MAD were easily as woeful if not fractionally worse. Hadfield (right) craps one out to explain
visually how Sunday’s performance ranked. Batting firstly,
Sunday’s debacle went south after an exhibition of quite dismal running and
utterly clueless batting. Here among the arid nothingness of ‘The Brakes’,
that wholly pathetic effort was convincingly matched, and we had only to wait
6 balls before Reeves hared off down the track for a diamond duck. Was there
a quick 2 there for the taking off the Hadfield (22) bat? I think a brain
scan or an appointment at Specsavers is your answer to that question. The forthcoming shower
of shit to walk out to the middle consisted of
Hotson (2), Shorten (6), Roberts (golden) and Timms (0), although Gary’s
dismissal merits further inspection. Stumped or an element of unsportsmanlike
behaviour with Timms practicing his previous shot out of the crease?
Correctly adjudicated as out, but a most questionable appeal against a crap pub team stumbling along on a paltry 34-5.
Thankfully, Captain Turner (0) solidified things moments later with a 3 ball duck. Golden Bob in full sway. Corporal Pearson (29*)
is in the form of his life at present and even if he wasn’t,
he would justly appear to be if bracketed with the collective turd around him.
Indebted to his reliable and consistent efforts, The MAD did squeeze narrowly
past Sunday’s subterranean total but only just as they finished on a
plaintive and sorrowful 74 all out. This after specialist fielder Howarth
sixth top scored with 1 and Carter was upended for the fifth blob of the
innings. In reply, the Oxford
University chaps found scoring on a sticky surface far easier. Timms and
Howarth looked toothless with the dirty pink ball, whilst Roberts (3-0-11-1)
was rewarded as the ironically named Lucky (20) was distinctly not so in
hitting his own stumps. Three quick wickets at
the half century mark then gave The MAD false hope. Pearson (2-0-15-1) bowled
one straight, Howarth caught a ball and in a combination with Reeves
(3-0-12-0) ran out Kesava for 20. Then some fellow named Reza tonked a quick fire 22* off 10 balls and it was all very
much game over. The MAD consistent by losing by a pile of wickets. It was now time for the
pub team to repair to a pub and be quite public about being gash. A lot of
derogatory stuff has been written about Kidlington over the years, mostly on
this website, but one should maybe make mention that it does actually have
several pubs. Thankfully they’re all closed, so the team buggered off to
Wolvercote. Onwards and… onwards to
Aston Tirrold. Darley (centre) explains his decision to leave
the vacuous town. ‘Sixth High Score’
