Following a completely
washed-out weekend, a pleasantly balmy evening at Queen’s saw The MAD
complete what has been a relatively rare win this season against a keen but
slightly understrength Appleton. The MAD made a very
handy start, racing to 83-1 off the first 11 overs. Williams slapped a rapid
(17) before falling to an excellent catch as he just failed to clear mid-off
with a firmly hit lofted drive. This brought in Dave Shorten who has had his
eye in for most of this season, compiling his 3rd jug avoiding 40+ (42*)
score of the year before retiring. His innings was notable for consistent use
of the signature Shorten shot, a slog sweep, usually for 6, in the arc
between midwicket and long-on. Then in a turn that was
later to be echoed in the Appleton innings, a combination of the retirement
of Shorten and the introduction of some slow bowlers slightly derailed The MAD
innings. The run rate dropped and wickets started to fall as Webster (16),
Bagot (2), Cartwright (0) and Harris (0) all fell within a few overs of each
other. Library footage of Timms trying to whack
something. Fortunately, Timms (18*)
and Turner (10) arrested the slide, played some shots and ran well to add
another 30 useful runs in the closing overs. James Shaw, our guest player and
erstwhile Bod-dude, kicked off a busy evening for himself by slapping his
first ball for 4 over midwicket and The MAD closed on 129-6. Appleton started even
faster than The MAD as their run rate momentarily stood at 36.00 after
Rundle’s first ball was deposited over long on. A quick calculation showed
that at this current rate of scoring Appleton could reach their target within
3.2 overs. Things improved, but after 7 overs Appleton were still very much
up with the rate at 47-1. The turning points were the retirement of
Appleton’s Buswell for a very rapid 30 and the introduction of Harris (1-14)
and Vermaak (1-10). These two put the squeeze on so successfully that their
first three overs together went for 2 runs, while Harris picked up the wicket
of the Appleton skipper, caught by Shaw. From this point on
Appleton struggled to score and Shaw, who couldn’t keep out of the action,
took three catches and three wickets to deservedly take the Man of the Match
award. Mr Shaw. For Paul Bagot, it was a
night of firsts. Within the space of 7 balls at the end of the innings, he
took his first MAD catch – a very decent effort diving forward at cover, for
which he earned his first MAD champagne moment – his first MAD wicket (caught
by Turner), which then completed his first Mad win after a mere half a dozen
games. ’William Tell’
