The final chapter of 2024’s epic Wootton Chronicles would end on the first day of September in Cassington, the very same venue as the previous week and that of the first chapter of this cricketing odyssey played out back on Sunday 5th May.

Aware of the doomsayers and depressing weather predictions as advertised by app, Captain Turner took the unusual step of actually winning a toss this weekend gone and the even more unusual decision to bat first. This masterstroke would offset needing to field later in the deluge that never materialised, and to mitigate only having ten men (or ten breathing bodies dressed in white).

With the early loss of Williams to the ageless A Walker (7-3-11-2), The MAD looked to solidify, consolidate and build towards a defendable target. Howarth (12) on the other decided in his infinite wisdom to crash a good length ball off stalwart Edwards airily to deep long off. Standing on the boundary’s edge, utterly immobile and utterly steadfast in his recent decision to move nowhere for nobody, Mr Poole (or ‘Pool-ee’ to his teammates) cupped his hands like an Australian and clasped the ball like someone had thrown a doughnut to his mouth. It was rumoured to be his first catch in over a decade and certainly one his teammates couldn’t stop laughing about. Spam simply grumbled off the pitch cursing his bat manufacturer.

Cartwright notices a ball hovering in the air.

Village cricket will always feature a few ludicrous dismissals you would never witness on TV, and that of Cartwright (17) and Rundle (24) would probably stumble half-cocked into this category. Joe would pirouette on the spot to a Poole flan before belting the ball onto his own timber, whereas Mark simply went through a thousand computations of where to twat it before simply lobbing some pastry back to the gut of a giggling mid-off.

With the innings petering out to its inevitable, doleful conclusion, Turner (17*) added some late steel to an otherwise flimsy 137, with Reeves, Kaito and Bob all hitting a few things and then failing to hit some other straighter things. Hoskins also whacked a few. Time for tea and time to honour another Cassington Feast with this weekend’s star turn being another bonafide quiche classic fit for a king. Mrs Hambridge, you are spoiling us!

Hoskins gives it some umpty as Shit Ash watches on.

In previous matches, Shit Ash* (Hambridge) has provided the anchor for Wootton’s Good Ash (Horne) or Arun White to smash us about the park, but after a pre-game agreement between skippers to retire at 50, Good Ash duly left the stage unbeaten but without a ton. It mattered little in the grand shake up, with Mr Barber clouting the winning runs at the death with over 6 overs to spare. One cherished episode during this routine rutting, was that of a bewildered Poole Snr being ran out, nay sacrificed, by Shit Ash for no apparent reason other than to himself (read a brainfart similar to that of Howarth at the start of the day).

We would later sign off at the Red Lion over a few beers and ciders as our Wootton counterparts would go through their own autopsy of the day. Needless to say, a run out may just have cropped up in their conflab.

A gaggle of Wootters.

Gentleman, it has been a trilogy of trilogies, but now it must be put to bed. For this year anyway. Wootton, we look forward to duelling with you next year and giving you a damned good thrashing.

* - Amusing nickname bestowed upon Ash by his own teammates.
