Friday generally starts
on Tour with fuzzy heads searching out mobiles for updates on the Group
WhatsApp chat. Were there any casualties from the first day? Did everyone get
back to their hotel bed in one-piece last evening? Has Jake thrown a cob and
headed back home? Thankfully, the answers to all these questions were the
ones you wanted to read. And yes, Jake did make it through to Day 2.
Following breakfast and
the correction of one’s appearance, the Tour party
agreed a meet at the seafront for Crazy Golf. Bob Roberts was the success
story, navigating the crumbling concrete and light winds to shoot a lower
score than anyone else managed and available for autograph hunters
post matchplay. Thereafter, it was on to the Hairy Dog for liquid
refreshments and televisual sport, some betting on horses at the bookies for
the gamblers, cinema up the road for the kids, trawling of pawn shops for
guitars for clowns, and then finally onwards to the Kildare Lodge for
Pétanque for all.

offer, it was perhaps a shame that everyone had to make the pilgrimage to
Minehead CC later in the day, a venue to several good hammerings over the
years and also a few solid thrashings. At least the ground was relatively
nearby and at least Bob didn’t fall down any embankments and turn his ankle.
AJ skips to the wicket for a flogging. Mr Cartwright skippered
the game and in flying in the face of fashion, decided against a coin toss
and instead simply allowed the home team to splatter 197 runs for the loss of
just the 3 wickets. Whilst this was a most chastising experience, for the
non-playing members of the Tour party it was most entertaining, watching
their comrades running about a vast, open parched grassland whilst they
sloshed back the odd pint or six by the bar. The standout MAD bowler didn’t
really exist, but at least it was warm and sunny.
Mr Shorten lobs some cherries into the blender. In reply, Mike (31 ret)
enjoyed himself and so did Lee (24) for a while. A. J. Darley most definitely
didn’t enjoy himself, and after swiping across the line for a second ball
duck, recorded several Oscars for his portrayal of this most unfortunate
wretch who suffered an all-consuming wingy cob. Hurrah! Towards the end of this
soulless battering, the Minehead fielders couldn’t be bothered to catch the
ball and indeed, dropped a few on the floor with purposeful apologies. No
need chaps, we know we’re pretty shit. MAD lose by 72 runs and Joe didn’t
bat.
Post match the bar
offered plenty in the way of drinking and plenty in the way of good humour,
and if you got hungry you could stop off at the MacDonalds just down the road
and have Geoff buy you a burger. Unfortunately, there was no alcohol on sale
so you would finish up as quickly as possible and leave. Final beverages
would then be consumed in the Quay Inn and furtherly at the Ship Aground,
where the exhausted bar lady advocated last orders and prayed you would just
bugger off to bed. Drinking completed,
players buggered off to bed.
Fifth Test Update Day
2: Eng 247, India 224
& 75-2 But what of Saturday? There was no cricket on
Saturday. Well, that's fine, so
what did people do?
Erm, the tourists were
divided into certain groups that either opted to go hiking and putting in
Lynton & Lynmouth, crawling from bar to bar in Watchet harbour (in honour
of the late Mr Mander) or clifftop rambling, darts and pétanque in Minehead.
People would then reconvene in the Quay Inn for extended Somerset darts and
pool and some more drinking and then march in an orderly way for a curry
banquet at the Taj Mahal where Mike dropped £550 including a bunch of
drinking.
Happy to report that
nobody died on these Saturday excursions, nobody got injured, Spam avoided
eating anything nuclear, Jake didn't disappear off home and then finally it
was a case of trying to remember who was playing cricket on the Sunday before
going to bed. Fifth Test Update Day
