Welcome then to the
second instalment of the Appleton Tri Team Tournament. Last year’s German
opposition had been replaced by the Rain Men, a collection of Post Grad
Oxford University types and publishers of the 3rd or 4th best book
documenting the travails of an extremely amateur cricket club to come out of
Oxfordshire. The format of the day
was to be three S16 matches, with eight bowlers, bowling a brace each and
retirements at twenty-five. Nicely set up then to deter any ringers, youths
or assorted eager beavers from dominating the day.
The day did of course encourage silly reverse
type thingies. For reasons that were
never quite clarified, it had been decided that The MAD would play games one
and three, which necessitated an early start, a late finish and a lot of
hanging about in between. Arriving at the ground
shortly before 10:30, there was the joyous sight of Jamo’s pizza van, with
its proprietors, James and Polly. White smoke was billowing from the chimney,
indicating that they had decided on the range of pizzas to be offered that
day. However, prior to that, there was the small matter of 32 overs against
the Apples to undertake.
The Apples. The
MAD, batting first, got off to a reasonable start with Howarth (26 n.o.) continuing his recent good form. The fact that his
teammates contributed just 32 runs between them and extras was second highest
scorer on 21 indicates just how much The MAD don’t do mornings. The innings
ended in rather farcical fashion with their wicket keeper A Mirrington making
three runouts in the last over including a good direct hit to remove Timms,
but then some suicidal calls from JMO getting Jake for a diamond and himself
shorn off by 22 yards as Paddy quite sensibly refused to leave his crease. 79
was never going to be enough, not nearly and the Apples made light work of it
in 13 overs.
