It was a Friday so its always sweet when the weathers good and there’s a
game of cricket to play. Additionally,
the wind was blowing away from the sewage treatment work meaning a fresh
summer smell filled the breeze as opposed to digesting faecal matter. It was
a real plus. It was great to see many
of the regular Apples out and Lego and their skip Alex decided upon a very
inclusive form of T20 whereby each bowler had a maximum of 3 overs and
retirement on 30. So it was that The MAD bowled 9 bowlers and the Apples 8,
all 11 Apples batted and 8 Madsters.

and elected to field. Step forth the heroist hero
of the night and MOTM Corne (3-0-6-3) who bowled the deadliest opening spell
seen in a long long
time. There was not one bad ball and he accounted
for three top order batters, severely reducing the Apples threat going
forward. It could have been 4 had Russ not done a circus skills workshop and
expertly juggled an edge at least five times but ultimately dropped the
catch, although catching a very entertaining MAD moment. At the other end
Nickel showed that he is human and for once couldn’t get his line and length
right (2-0-23-1), but did bag a big wicket thanks to an incredible catch from
Howarth. Spam’s catches are like
Rocking Horse Poo – very rare to be seen – but this was a gem that fought
through a strong field to win the Champagne moment. Gilkes heaved a short
ball out to cow with a low fast trajectory. A startled spam adjusted to his
left and collapsed into a falling dive with his eyes shut at the critical
moment only to open them with the ball firmly planted in both hands. He was
mobbed. What a catch. A big wicket. Lego rotated the bowlers
and mostly everyone stood up and delivered, except for the skipper who took
the last over and delivered some ugly iced buns for the number 11 Apple to
feast on – giving an extra 10 runs to leave the home team on 116. Notable
contributions were the ever-reliable Rundle (2-0-5-3), Reeves (3-0-15-0) and
Pearson (2-0-6-0). Notable also was the return of the reliable Howarth. For
two games he has spewed the ball in all direction which is what we were used
to him doing with excess cider back in the day, but after grumbling about it
being his body, or perhaps his mind, or perhaps a slight knock in the earths
gravitational field, or a nearby Ley Line, he settled down like a content old
dog and found his rhythm again. The Apples conducted
their innings in a very bright and positive way all the way down, and at the
halfway point the thinking was that it was a par score. The pitch definitely
had demons in it. There was lateral movement and very variable bounce at one
end, meaning helmets were a sensible option but equally steel toe caps.
Reeves trudges off ahead of a stellar weekend
with the bat. And so, The MAD went out
a hunting another bit of green (win). Reeves and Pearson opened up, Reeves
wielding his newly mended bat, but didn’t really get to test it out on this
visit bowled for 0. Harris joined JP and they played properly and sensibly to
some decent bowling, stealing singles and playing some majestic drives.
Particular mention goes to John (31 ret) who drove three through the covers
and finished with a classical straight six which had everyone gasping as it
was his FIRST SIX for The MAD, not a bad one too. Upon JP’s retirement (32
ret) Timms entered the fray and continued his good form for an energetic 11,
running himself out going for second to a ball that barely left the square –
but he very nearly made it. Only he could have. Cartwright in his short
innings oozed the class he possesses for a quick 4, Shorten came and went for
a brief 8 leaving Nickel and Howarth at the crease needing 20-odd from 4
overs. Three quick fours from Howarth (12*) and a lusty blow from Nickel
(12*) sealed the win in quick time.
JP looks to carve one away. Which he probably
did. Good friendly cricket
but with a good competitive and some real highlights from both teams. Thanks
to the Apples for the effort to get the pitch ready and for hosting us and we
look forward to our next encounter. Footnote: a thrilling
addition to the live action was also the live video updates posted by Tall
Bob, who unable to play because of a chipped knuckle bone sustained whilst
fielding, instead took the role of cameraman. For posterity much of The MAD
fielding performance has been preserved forever on the group chat – navigate
there in the winter for a bit of summer action. Thank you, Bob excellent
