Cricket matches can be neatly summed by using the adjectives won, lost, drawn, tied, abandoned or simply cancelled. Particular to village cricket and Sundayism (doff of the cap to Mr Mann), is the other outcome which can be more expanded to read ‘totally cocked it up and fucking lost the bastard game.’ This particular ending to a match can leave the losing team feeling rather introspective, whingy and to a certain degree, pissed off. Such was this Sunday gone and completely The MAD’s own fault.

Always a joy to decamp at Brasenose for the first home game of the season. It is only then that the cricket season feels like it has truly got underway, sat back on those striped deckchairs watching some less than average cricket and Salter’s Steamers meandering past on the Thames in the background. There were a few new additions to observe, such as an inventive wooden staircase connecting to Queens College next door and also a concrete expanse in front of the pavilion for the scoreboard. Of course, the scoreboard comes with a wooden trough for the numbers, and can you imagine the distress to anyone suffering from OCD to find that one particular section of the trough wasn’t accommodating its numbers (the 9s) in an orderly way? Step forth builder Shorten and house flipper Vermaak with drills, screws and hammers to sort the situation out. Phew! Once the numbers were aligned correctly, the match could eventually begin.

The Quarry’s innings would be largely held together by the ageing glue which is Frederick (41), mixing stout defence with the occasional punch to off and leg. He watched opener Jeffries (37) clump some errant MAD bowling about and then a few handy little cameos down the order. The bowling was unspectacular as it went through the motions to an opposition noted as being short on familiar faces and very probably weak in strength (I mean why would you roll them over – it’s a friendly match, right?) Pick of the undercooked flan lobbing was Rundle (5-1-10-2), who has started the season in that oh-so very understated manner of his to very great effect.

Teas were made in Nottingham and shipped by Reeves Enterprises to the ground and very nice they were too. It is always very much appreciated when someone goes that extra mile to actually do teas, so don't worry about the exacting details of the contents or whether the odd picky fucker doesn't quite get a spread that fits his/her delicate palette. Remember y’all how crap Covid BYO grub/forgotten grub was a few years ago (and still refuses to totally go away from the game....)

With HQ suffering from a dearth of apparent bowling options, The MAD could afford to mix up their batting lineup a tad and let Williams and Ainsworth venture out and clobber the usual large portion of the required run chase (141 required).

Williams swats a quick short one to a waiting square leg.

Oh, we forgot Sreenath was a more than tidy medium pacer, and oh, that dude at the far end is a bit handy as well! Ambling in, the young fella (Heath) suddenly explodes at the popping crease and zips it through a bit. Oh, Chris (1) is out from shock value and oh, look like he's done for Lee (14) to boot. Never mind, see these two opening bowls off and it’s a nice walk in a very pleasant, manicured park with a paucity of bumpy lumpy things to worry about.

Having appropriated the above intentions, Shorten (15) duly swung across the line to be followed by a string of other dismal MAD efforts as the Quarry darts of the Wily Warner (3-29) and Barman Davis (3-18) dulled the reply and essentially stamped on any pre-match arrogance. It was insipid at best.

Howarth (38*) appears to have finally awoken from his underachieving coma of recent times, but even his late foray failed to apply much polish to what really was a turd of an innings. It was pretty dreadful in summation, with most of everyone left flummoxed as to how the team had contrived to lose so comfortably to ten men who included a raft of late call ups and apparent corpses from the pub gutter. HQ the deserved winners.

I leave you with this resonating quote from the famed, literary critic Edgar Allan Poe: “Believe only half of what you see, and nothing that you hear.”
