One of the club’s favourite T20 fixtures is that of the season ending tussle with the Mandarins. A team much like ourselves, they play the game with a touch of irony, they consist of players who have largely seen their better days, they happily engage in the banter both on and off the field and most importantly, they check out with a pint or two post-match. This is and always should be the village norm.

After a week of unseasonal rain, Friday ushered in a dry and bright evening which lent itself to completing a match bowled by throwing down ten overs from one end and then the other. There were no extra balls on show for wides and no balls (counted as 2 extras), which was just as well as we’d have been playing beyond midnight. With only the final over defaulting to normal cricketing rules, the match went along at a decent pace.

With the T20 MAD Skipper having left for foreign climbs and shafting most people's Fantasy teams up the arse, Howarth stepped into the breach to moan a lot and offer little in the way of encouragement to anyone other than young Toby Pyrah (aged 12). He did win a rare toss, and he did end up doing what he probably wouldn’t have (fielding first) due to late arrivals navigating the infamous, shitty Oxford traffic. But hey ho, the civil servants got to bat first on what was a relatively damp surface a result of the recent rains.

Nickel (4-1-15-1) took the early scalp with a neat slower ball, before Tonbridge (35 ret) opened his shoulders and whacked it about a bit. The next wicket would have to wait for the introduction of Mr Pearson in the 10th over, fresh from his family duties in Ireland where he enjoyed bugger all Wi-Fi in entertaining his kids amongst the potato farms. His inclusion in the team a result of training a pigeon to fly back to the UK mainland and deliver a note to Mr Timms.

Thereon, wickets fell more regularly, and despite being mentally estranged with the ball and in the field (and please don’t mention his crazy run out attempt) Daddy Pyrah avoiding the ignominy of dropping a catch off his son, Toby. Gary would wheel away whilst looking something like back to his best, Roberts was ok in parts, whilst Howarth (2-2) nipped out a couple of Rundle-approved bunnies at the death to have The MAD chasing 119 for victory.

With the light now starting to dwindle behind the Horspath hills and foliage, Hadfield (6) complained about a season to forget after being castled orchestrating a very forgettable shot. Pearson (15) slogged one into an adjoining bungalow for Geoff to collect and Howarth (15) slogged one into the hands of some poor bugger who tumbled backwards into the scoreboard apparatus (six). It was exactly the same spot where Spam was caught a few seasons earlier, Horspath legend Mr Eason spilling his pint whilst laughing his head off. You are so sorely missed by everyone, Max.

The MAD innings would be held together by Mr Harris (37 ret), smiting the odd boundary here and there, failing to run himself out, before leaving the finishing duties to Pyrah Snr (19*) and the team’s master tactician, Mr Carter (3*). If there was any pressure going into those final overs, Geoff suppressed it with a cocktail of missed swipes, unconvincing wobbles up the wicket and some cavalier blocks. MAD win in the final over and thus reversing a losing trend in this format initiated back at the start of July.

With poor light turning to no light, players assembled for the traditional group pose by the electronic scoreboard and then drank some beer. Money and thanks were then exchanged with the Horspath hierarchy for their hosting of the game, and we very much look forward to seeing our orange capped, pencil pushing opposition for many years to come.
