With the season evaporating into its final chapter, The MAD travelled back down south for cricketing adventures anew at Cholsey Meadows. Famous (or infamous) for the former loony bin (Fairmile) that flanks the pitch on one side, it was to be thankful that being reunited with a ghost of the past wasn’t a mass murderer, but MAD Player #71.

Hebbes (bowling) a little greyer on the top.

It was great to see Nick Hebbes, judasing for Cholsey, although pity we didn’t see him until the hosts were 99-1. Like most of us, he’s a lot older and a lot greyer, but unlike most of us it appears he hasn’t forgotten how to bat (or bowl) in the intervening years since he last turned out for The MAD.

This match was notable for a delicious tea and for a children’s wicket (of about 19 yards) painted on the strip adjacent to the one we were using. This did for Nick as he stood there, inside the child’s crease, but not unfortunately inside the adult one as J Harris knocked the (adult) stumps down. Surely no-one would be stupid enough to do that again. What’s that? Oh, unlucky Spam. Yes, it is quite confusing having several white lines painted in close proximity to one another, would do for almost anyone (I guess).

With The MAD spluttering and farting to eventually finish 86 runs shy of their target, Harris’ pugnacious 39 mattered little. This match was very much done and as it transpired, so was the season as a whole as it turned out. The following Sunday’s opposition failed to materialise and with the cold and wet weather that ushered in across the UK, perhaps that was a blessing.

Another season over is over.

Just like that.

See some of you at the AGM if not before.
