Sunday saw another blisteringly hot day at Brasenose. The sort of day where there’s no such thing as too much fluid to be taken on board. The cracks on the Brasenose square were opening wider than the San Andreas fault, but not fortunately on the strip we were bowling on.

Russ was preparing for tour by stretching his muscles in unfortunate places and so we were back in the capable hands of Mr Timms for the afternoon. Gary won the toss and so very sensibly we would be batting first.

Enstone has arrived with several kids, but we’re well past the days where we would consider that some sort of disadvantage for them. Now it’s more a case of who’s best, someone approaching thirteen or sixty-three? Problem is, that is only heading in one direction, and the balance will decisively switch as it moves to fifteen and sixty-five.

The MAD, on this day, could be charitably described as more of a bowling team, with the tail starting around number 4. There was therefore some pressure on the openers of Shorten (4) and Dan Shaw (54) followed by Spam (12) at number 3. Opening the bowling were J Acton and F Woodworth, aged 12 and 13 respectively. It’s understood that Master Acton is too quick for the under 13’s and therefore plays with an older age group. He was certainly too good for several of the over 50’s. Dan was soon joined by Shaw senior (28) and father and son moved the score towards respectability. After that there was very little to write about. Reeves (15) was there for a long time for not a lot, whilst the tail end of the tail contributed 4 between them. Nevertheless, a reasonable total of 150 had somehow been achieved, all out with one over to go.

Tea was long and leisurely, before Enstone started their reply with another youngster S Lee (46) smashing The MAD openers to all parts, and at 42 for 0 in six overs it looked like the game would be over in quick time. However, all that was about to change with the change in bowling and change in attitude as J Hoskins (7-1-10-4) was introduced. Not only was his bowling magnificent, including breaking the opening partnership with his first ball, it was his enthusiasm and belief which changed the game.

There were a couple of great catches from Hotson behind the stumps and one from Rundle at gully as Enstone slumped to 106 for 8 after 30 overs. With the batters having a combined age of 25 and needing 45 off 5 overs, surely the game was done and dusted. However, this does not factor in young players abilities to run quickly, annoyingly and copiously between the wickets whilst The MAD contrived to literally and figuratively throw the game away. Zero’s were turned into one’s, one’s into two’s and sometimes three’s as the young pair scampered up and down the wicket whilst The MAD could only watch and chuck the ball at each other’s ankles, or in some cases several yards to the left or right of each other’s ankles. The MAD moment was secured as J Shaw ran away from the ball, on the advice of his team mates as it rolled over the boundary. Go left, no, your left, or something like that….

Finally, sanity was restored and the last two wickets secured, MAD win by 16 runs. A really nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. We can safely say that if the same teams were to meet in 2, 5, 10 or twenty years’ time, the result could be very different.
