After recent batting debacles where the often-maligned bowlers have bailed out the listing MAD frigate, Sunday’s nautical adventure took the crew north of Wallingford to the quintessential village of Britwell Salome. A recent addition to the club’s travels, it is a picturesque place and team that tick most of the right boxes. An opponent with no little irony, great teas and of course a famous net that prevents balls from disappearing into the garden of a former, disgruntled resident – a lady who bitched and complained after purchasing said property right next to a fucking cricket ground. No matter it plunged the club into debt, she sold up a few years later and fucked off (as they generally do). Most probably to acquire a cottage by a church to bitch and complain about ringing bells every day.

Waite slaps one through the covers.

Moving it on, if guessing the toss was regarded as an art form, then Pablo Turner would surely now have sold his print works and be living comfortably by delirious seawaters in the Maldives somewhere? Winning once again, The MAD would bat first, again, thus negating a long afternoon in the field if their batting was shit (again).

One notable difference between the sides was that of age. Where the hosts were mostly centred between the 20s and 30s, the visitors were vested in middle 40s and decrepit (Geoff). No matter, opener Lucan dealt with a few missiles from Thomas before he didn’t, to have Spam and recent debutant Waite see the team through to the 15th over on 54-1. Not too bad thus far.

Now for the really quick missiles of C. Little, who was only given the one over to demonstrate his raw pace and ability by splattering Howarth’s (27) woodwork to one he barely saw and leaving Carter dazed and very much confused. Waite (30) added to this mid-innings malaise by simply running himself out, as you do, but quite correctly failing to blame Webster, as we all normally do.

Waite (left) taking his life in his hands by running with… Webster.

Thereafter the visitors were mostly shit, but Big John (9*) at least rediscovered he could bat again towards the death. 116 all out and time to get stuck into a very delightful teas and a big shout out to the lovely girlfriends, wives and friendly folk of Britwell for making it happen (there are no lingering and distinctly ridiculous Covid excuses in this part of the world).

In reply, nothing much deviated from the spectacle of the ball disappearing to most parts of north Wallingford, before Lucan decided he could catch. Not once, but three times actually, all perfectly pouched with the aplomb he once demonstrated whilst butchering his nanny. So, very well done him, because the rest of us were pretty shit in losing by 6 wickets, with Bob (2-46) and Timms (2-27) sharing a couple apiece.

Mr Pyrah Snr slices one to gully whilst remembering he can bat quite well.

Post match, the absent sun would return to warm your hands as you clasped a nice cold beer, engaging as is our want in a good fucking moan. Happy days lads, we might have come second, but this was a fine day out. A big thankyou to our hosts, we wish them well for the season ahead.

See you soon.
