On a pleasantly warm day
by the much lauded and quickly expanding UK science campus that threatens the
balance of the Earth, The MAD enjoyed a nail-biting conclusion to a riveting match
against a Harwellian Select XI. A match played out adjacent to a giant
inflatable planetarium boasting a chorus of excited kids and agitated parents,
beamed out as it was across the globe on UHD and televisual rights. It also
provided an absorbing distraction to any ‘simple’ nearby boundary fielders
(Rundle) who really should have been concentrating on their fucking job at
hand….
The two protagonists at the wicket…. Dropping the toss
(literally), Turner and Cordy Williams agreed to total confusion with the
home team opting to field first because it suited both parties (apparently).
Howarth and the skip subsequently strode to the wicket, whereby both fended
off alarming pop at one end that could be likened to a supersonic trampoline
in Bouncy Land. After Spam departed (18) disappointingly whilst wafting over
one (surprise), Pyrah Snr (33) continued his excellent return to form by
showcasing his obvious talent before he then became rather shit (dismissed). With other batters
coming and going through most the afternoon, the innings as a whole was
anchored by the indomitable Turner (48), who really really
did deserve to bat through and celebrate a defiant and wholly deserved fifty.
No matter that JMO called him through for a suicidal single in the
penultimate over and ran him out then…. FFS. A few more cuffs from the lower
middle and the continually impressive Morgan Darley (16 off 12 balls) and The
MAD innings topped out at 159-6. Time for tea and well-deserved interval moan
about nothing in particular other than moaning….
Pyrah Snr giving it the big heave-ho….
Inflatable distraction in the background…. Teas are always most
pleasant at Harwell, very much so, with each dish having appropriate signage
to guide players with a discerning palette wide of poisoning themselves (read
allergies, and the vegans and veggies). A shame then that the retarded
visitors (FFS) chose to walk around the reverse side of the table and be
oblivious to these helpful little signs to pick out their sandwiches, pizzas
and aperitifs. They say you gain wisdom with age, but they also say our team
is full of dickheads….
In reply, the ‘science
kids’ were okay but restricted by the exemplary bowling of A Darley (2-17),
Vermaak (2-26) and Rundle (3-23). The latter going through his repertoire of
bunny boiling techniques to add to his list of Leporidae culls (yeah, if you
don’t know what that word is, then look it up online you lazy twat?) Fielding
was mostly excellent, with Turner and Hoskins both hanging on to some super
efforts to avoid being shouted at, with Turner’s unbelievable magnifico later
ignored when it came to Champagne…. Coming
in at 58-4 and seeing subsequent batters splattered to leave the Science Boys
on 112-8, J. Manwani would keep his cool, clonk the odd shite to the boundary
and generally keep the home team in the game with a very cool head….
But,
with the dismissal of Beech (2), it left Harwell still 20 short of victory
with only Skipper Williams to come. Game completely in the balance and people
momentarily distracted from the inflatable planetarium…. (Rundle) How
to play the end game: twat the bad ball, keep the tailender off-strike
whenever possible, cross your fingers. And so it was, Manwani would have his
day by doing the previously mentioned requisite for victory and very well
deserved, with Corde (0* off 3 balls) seeing her team home in the best of
finishes. An
excellent (most excellent) match and a superb advert for Sunday cricket and sportsmanship,
with no shortage of banter throughout and a bloody good laugh. Harwell, you
are a very definitely a mirror of us these days. See you all soon.
