Stuart has been a regular opponent of The MAD since way back in 2003, offering up his talented all-round pedigree to those book hoarding chaps who represent the famed Bodleian library. If you were to drill down into their cricketing website you would also glean that he has been an “occasional skipper, Tour superintendent and in the early days, Bodley’s Mr. Consistency. In more recent years, Stuart has taken to batting more keenly, perfecting a unique approach that begins with taking a guard on the adjacent pitch, and then stepping back some more before swiping at the ball with the underside of the bat. Never happy on the pitch, and even more pessimistic off it, Stuart is nonetheless the beating heart of the club.”

In summation of the above, it would therefore appear as though Mr Ackland was perhaps the one that got away or the one that got away having never been with this Club in the first place. Articulate and a cynical pleasure to be around, he has of course represented the Far from the MCC on a few occasions when numbers have been tight, watching in suspended disbelief as his first MAD wickets were dropped to the floor….

Born somewhere amongst the combative plains of Afghanistan, Rahman was plucked from an obscure newsagent’s shop in St. Clements on one of Mr Leggate’s wild and boozy evenings in 2013. Despite guesting for only a couple of times for The MAD, Razza demonstrated a more than useful ability with both bat and ball. Precocious medium pace complemented a fine biffer of the ball – an explosive cameo at Harwell would come to mind.

Despite the obvious language barrier and nonsensical, eccentric British behaviour all around him, Mr Alizha seemed to enjoy himself on the whole, just a pity he seemed plagued by injuries and changed his mobile number every week….

Unusually optimistic or more realistically naive, Max was roped into experiencing regular MAD defeats by Club stalwart Mike Reeves. With obviously nothing better to do and perhaps convinced by a pack of lies, Mr Anderson enjoyed fleeting successes in being slightly better than the rubbish that surrounded him.

Promising with both bat and ball, Max slotted into the team most efficiently, which is what you would expect from a man with an army pedigree. Alas, the conflicts and sounds of bugles came a-calling, and he left to try and sort out some trifling issues that persist in the Middle East. One day he may return…?

A skilled woodworker by trade, Petr nearly shared his name with the Chelsea FC goalkeeper of that time, and spent his short duration with The MAD admonishing his team mates who asked him how his footballing career was going. It was with great sadness when he upped and left for New Zealand in the fall of 2007 – as he amused all with his dry sense of wit and childlike enthusiasm for a game he simply couldn’t comprehend. Thankfully, his name is etched in our scorebook forever after carving one through the slips at Jordan Hill.

Every inch a cricketer, James played 9 games for The Jude, taking a more than respectable 7 wickets at 30.00 and scoring 96 exquisite runs at 10.67 with a high score of 32 against The Baldons in 1999. Fielding unusually close, Mr Blann had a welcome habit of taking the most athletic catches. His brother Richard also played 3 times for The Jude Obscure.

Although playing only the 5 times for The Jude, Simon made a huge impact with the bat, scoring 210 runs at 42.00 with a high score of 86 (a then HS record). When he left the team, Simon was missed almost as much as his voluptuous girlfriend. Ahh, what was her name again? Simon’s brother Michael also played twice for The Jude.

One of a bunch of new faces who made his debut for The MAD in 2003, Graham was poached along with several others from corporate behemoth Vodafone. A keen athlete who loved his running, he would go on to make 16 appearances straddling two seasons for the [then] Far from the Madding Crowd. Always enthusiastic in the field where he could run about a lot, Mr Bridges eventually found the rest of the game to be boring and impractical. I mean, why not just run about a lot instead of playing with this stupid leather ball in these ridiculous white trousers?

Andy Cav’s laconic drawl and wry wit made him an amusing member of The MAD. After an uncertain start in 2006, hardly knowing when to appeal and when not to, Andy soon got the hang of it, and for several games the cry of “Howzat!” could be heard after just about every delivery, until that guy from OUP got sick of it and wrapped his bat round Andy’s head.

Andy began shakily at the crease, but found his feet towards the end, and looked positively batsman-like during his high score of 16. In his short stint for The Club, he took 5 catches in all, but just a shame that two of them were subbing for the University Offices (a ‘Judas’ fielding record).

Mike will always be remembered for his wonderful knock of 61 on Tour against Watchet CC in 2005. Since that fateful day he invariably failed to live up to the great expectations. Actually, he failed to turn up at all most times, preferring the company of ladies from China, Russia and Spain to the corrosive bunch of fuckers he called his teammates. Naturally he always maintained he was teaching – but teaching what exactly, Mike?

Intelligent, well-travelled and multilingual, Mr Clarke always had a deep penchant for graveyard and acidic humour, where his talking of bollocks grew exponentially the more he got pissed. He’s still in contact with The Club and he may well play again … but until he fulfils that promise, he can stay on this fucking page.

Simon was the fixture secretary for Didcot CC, who guested for The MAD on the club’s only visit to the ground back in 2017. A batsman cut from the blocking stock that made Antony Mann so famous, he proved a cunning slow bowler who was unlucky to reap no rewards on that day.

First things first – Jenner could bat. He represented The MAD just a handful of times between 2008 and 2011, making his debut alongside his brother JP at Stratfield Brake, Kidlington. Despite registering just a single on that day, he looked the goods before his subsequent angry retreat into town thereafter to get bladdered. Next time out he put the record straight, flogging a hapless Blenheim Park XI all over central Oxford in recording the fastest MAD ton ever recorded in terms of balls faced (76). We guess he had a point to prove.

Abrasive if misunderstood, there was a depth and humour to Jenner that endeared him to his teammates. Sadly however, organising his presence in the team proved convoluted to say the least. He hated email groups, and he hated giving his mobile number out, henceforth any contact involved complex and protracted negotiations via his buddy, Mr Ian Leggate. Now that the latter resides in Canada it’s even more convoluted.

JP debuted for The MAD towards the end of the 2008 season alongside his brother Jenner (above left). An Australian by birth, he buggered off back whence he came at the end of the 2009 season, much akin to our other famous native Australian before him. A very handy hitter down the order, it was with the ball where JP really impressed, taking several useful wickets with his consistent medium pace. Mr Collins also had the longest run up in Sunday cricket history, requiring the boundary wall to be removed from behind the bowler’s arm to accommodate his approach to the wicket.

A fine player whose stint in the 2003 Madding Crowd team was kept to just one game by a horrific plastering injury. Lee played 14 matches in all for The Jude and The MAD, taking 12 wickets with accurate his left-arm bowling, but it was with the bat that he truly excelled. His top score of 97* against South Oxford Social Club at Horspath in 2001 is still one of the highest MAD scores, and if Mr Dobner, substituting for the opposition that day, hadn’t flung himself on the boundary to prevent a four – then we would be talking about The Club’s first ever centurion. But we’re not, sadly. That said, a career batting average of over 50 isn’t to be sniffed at.

A true all-rounder, the mercurial Mr Davie was also very quick behind the stumps and in the field – winning the coveted Player of the Season shield in 2001. He last returned to MAD ranks at the start of 2005, but since that day sightings have been rare. He also played occasionally for the St Clements Strollers.

An Antipodean all-rounder of no little talent, in his only game for The Jude, Adrian was out for one, bowled a series of unrecorded beamers and fielded like a turd – all while wearing whites three sizes too small. In his defence, Deans was just off the plane from Australia and hadn’t played in several years, but on the other hand, the stats do not lie.

A novelist by trade, Mr Deans penned the sports novel ‘Mr. Cleansheets’ amongst others to become the latest in a long line of distinguished Australian novelists.

A regular with Stanton St. John Willows and long-time close friend of Lee Davie, Simon Dickens played only twice for The Jude, but in doing so helped himself to 9 wickets at a staggering 9.44. On debut, against Marcham CC in 1999, he went so far as to register the quite wonderful figures of 6-24, which is still one of the best hauls ever for The MAD. He was also never dismissed. A true ringer if ever there was. BONG!

After his debut well over two decades ago, the portentous Mr Dobner managed to have a go at everything and everybody in that time, including himself. However, advancing years and family life would eventually mellow the inner rage, a cynical and sarcastic mouth replacing the fists and vitriol. Back in the day, Steve would regularly commute each and every weekend from Essex, a talented batsman with no little ability with the ball. Being adroit with the keeper’s gloves (akin to his brother-in-law Gary Littlechild), he could therefore claim to be the true all-rounder. Stevie D last played for The MAD back in 2017 and is now a keen vegan runner.

A veteran of over 10 games for Jude and MAD, Paul was last seen heading off the field following the 2002 Bodleian game at Pembroke in a heavy sweat, and next day being admitted to hospital with pneumonia. Sorry Paul, we shouldn’t have begged you to play. Mr Drake was an occasional bowler, and a useful batsman who top scored with 22. He also set the benchmark for ineptitude between the wickets, being run out in a quarter of all the games he played.

A clever and witty chap, Rob first discovered cricket when he realised all his mates were missing most Sundays playing, erm… cricket. He ended up playing 7 matches in total for the Far from the MCC, before accepting an undisclosed bribe from work colleague Ralph Smith and joining up with rivals and village bumpkins Astons CC back in 2012. Games between the two clubs are always convivial with both sets of undesirables urinating in each other’s kit bags and throwing helmets at each other’s heads.

Dan became The MAD’s ever reliable run-machine after debuting back in the fall of 2004. A defensively solid opener, he gorged on dot balls with a fervour only equalled by the great Geoffrey Boycott. When Dan wasn’t batting, he was thinking about batting. Even when he was cutting down trees and hedgerows at work, he’d be practicing his pulls and cover drives with a chainsaw.

In his nine seasons with The MAD, Dan amassed over 3,000 stylish runs whilst taking many useful wickets with that crazy [whirlwind] bowling action of his. In fact, given Mr Edwards had a reputation as a yawn-inducing blocker, his T20 stats make quite remarkable reading. Clearly here was a man with a game for all formats and many subsequent clubs.

Danial was coaxed into playing for The Club in 2013, after a catalogue of injuries left the club with only a Giant Duck and three cripples on the subs bench. A quietly spoken, acute and curiously laidback fellow, his claims to not having played cricket since he was a teenager seemed somewhat absurd, particularly as he demonstrated a higher calibre of bowling to that of his younger brother, David. Utilising those burly shoulders and bright red sprinters shoes, he got the ball through a little quicker than you might imagine. Amusing in the field, he never did secure that first illusive MAD run, but he did live in a caravan before his brother emulated his achievement.

Nick was one of a clutch of new faces that breathed life into The MAD back in 2003. A gifted cricketer with a tirelessly and irritatingly happy persona, his consistently upbeat personality was in stark contrast to that of his downtrodden, pessimistic teammates. Ever the joker, he was always at the fore of things on Tour, annoying everyone with his astute visual jokes and insane fucking happiness. And don’t even mention those stupid plastic singing swords.… And then, quite inscrutably, he was gone….

As the years ticked by The Club received occasional emails from someone using his name, but by and large it was understood he was now living elsewhere on Mother Earth as a doting dad. And then it happened, out of the blue, he mysteriously reappeared back in 2017 like NOTHING had ever happened…. Was it him? Was it really him? Erm, yes… it took all of two minutes for him to take the stereo off pause and go into a diatribe of observational nonsense for anyone who would listen.

Nick now pulls on the whites for Cholsey on the odd occasion, like at the end of season 2025 where he proved he can still bat and bowl, and get run out on an adjacent wicket.

Steve, brother of Nick [above right], and the second half of a complete fennel. He was the inventor of the now infamous skidding delivery characterised by a complete lack of bounce. The Hebbes ‘skidder’, which tended to leave the batsman bamboozled and most “Out”, was always accompanied by an embarrassed cry of “Oops!” Experienced observers of the game of cricket have long theorised that the ‘Oops ball’ is most easily perfected by the vertically challenged.

A handy lower order bat, and a regular wicket taker, Steve was particularly impressive in 2003 when he bagged 19 victims. The MAD miss his all-round game after he relocated to Newcastle and then London, and then somewhere else, and then maybe somewhere else after that. Steve was last seen on the Mumbles Tour in 2008 where he played hardly any cricket, but did write a magnificent match report for the Whitland CC match (#163).

Another gentleman called Nick, but a younger Nick and another one who… erm, doesn’t really play much cricket anymore. Being that he was another in a long line of chosen applicants from the Centrica Sporting Portfolio, Mr N. S. Hill brought an effervescent and youthful vigour to Team MAD back in 2012. Exuding a likeable charm and no little knowledge about, er… baseball, there was a buzz of excited anticipation every time Nick strode out to bat. There was no doubt he could hit a home run and there was no doubt baseball doesn’t work in cricket – however, it was great fun watching Nick trying to disprove the latter theory….

A regular face in the T20 arena, Nick’s unschooled Fantasy stock rose to stratospheric heights before he relocated to Italy and then somewhere up north after that. One day he may return….

A fine player in his pomp, he is now happily retired in the West Country and still moaning.

Moreover, he actually looked quite adept with both bat and ball, a real rarity in these public drinking times. Assiduous and academic, Mr Jenkins had a mischievous eye which thankfully didn’t dull his competitive edge. Appearances were at a premium however, due in no small part to the fact that Luke plied his trade for another dozen teams or so.

With a defunct email and a defunct presence, Luke is now considered gone. Maybe one day he may return, or he’ll be guesting for the opposition on an unsuspecting Sunday….

Right or wrong, Dylan could always be heard muttering under his breath, or sulking about captain James Hoskins’ many decisions both on and off the field. He also had one of the very finest innings to duck conversion rates (35%) of anyone to have played for The Club. We salute you, sir.

No, not the 80s pop star, what on earth were you thinking? Howard, who actually preferred Joy Division, was a Jude stalwart of over 30 games up until the beginning of 2002 and also made a few cameo appearances in 2004. A dashing batsmen and fine pace bowler prone to occasional lapses in concentration at the crease and in the field, he was Player of the Season in 1999 and overall averaged nearly 30 with the bat. Although he twice took 5 for 9, his most impressive spell came against The Team With No Name at Horspath in 2000, when in a rain-ruined match he destroyed the opposition top order with 3-3 in 3 unplayable overs. He also held a then Club Record for Most Catches In An Innings (4), against South Oxford Social Club in 2001.

Howie has now relocated to Wales, although he may have relocated somewhere else since. He also has the rare record of batting on more occasions than games played (how very village).

He hadn’t slept, he undoubtedly wasn’t sober, but nonetheless wandered out in his beach shorts to bat as last man. His unbeaten 9 not out off just 4 balls contained a gargantuan six and helped him to a Club Strike Rate of 225.00. It is of course without peer.

One-time manager of Jude The Obscure in Walton Street, Chris was a founding player who was heard at the 2000 AGM to exclaim ‘I’m not playing under that fucking Aussie!’ (who could he have meant?), thus casting the team elections into chaos and recriminations. An opening bowler and batsman, he took 16 wickets at 22.81 and scored 200 runs at 16.67 with a high of 49 against Isis CC at Cutteslowe Park in 1999. Chris would go on to marry an extremely beautiful nurse and bugger off up north to manage a sports store somewhere.

He is/was universally regarded as the essential Tour Accessory nay the greatest Tourist in MAD History, being colourfully unconventional, idiosyncratic and thriving in adversity. So, it was with great sadness when the inevitable call of the Northern Exposure came, and Ian left these shores to start a family in Canada with his beloved Sandra (MAD Player #120 in case you were wondering).

Ian is still classed as a relatively, kind-of current player because he does frequent The Shires every few years to catch up with his family and also to rekindle his love of shit cricket. In fact, he dropped by just last season (2025) to record a wicket against HQCC and a sumptuous 27 with the bat.

As a founding member of the Jude Obscure and past Captain, Eddie brought a wealth of experience to the team as an eminent hypnotherapist, although none of his teammates really needed hypnotising to get pissed. Enthusiastic and one of cricket’s great triers, his best performance came in 2003, when he smashed a remarkable 666 not out against a team of imaginary fielders, hitting an imaginary cricket ball emblazoned with James Hoskins’ face on during an imaginary match [the game was called off btw but without Ed being told].

Mr Lester’s Tour organising prowess were legendary among Tour organisers, and his ability to collect Tour deposit money from recalcitrant players did come to the attention of local Mafia groups wishing to hire him as a debt collector. Alas, Ed left The Club back in the fall of 2004 and now lives amongst the orcs and hobbits of New Zealand, acting as a life coach, business consultant and beacon of eternal optimism.

Eddie was and always will be The MAD. He is… after all… Player #001.

Technically gifted and supremely talented, sports teacher Gary brought an air of keen professionalism to the ranks when he first debuted in 2005. Notable for his swashbuckling batting including a Club Record 117 not out against Hanney CC, it was his constant flare-ups as keeper with square leg umpires that linger long in the memory. These fucking umpires never got one marginal stumping correct. Not one. Ever. Because Mr Littlechild told us so. These unscrupulous batsmen were always given “not out” despite the line being Gary’s and it being that fucking obvious. Sometimes his brother-in-law, Mr Dobner, would get in on the act and help to spell it out for the umpire using an extensive 4-letter vocabulary, again seemingly, to no avail. But there was always an Essex car park available.

A consummate cricketer whenever he wasn’t arguing with umpires, he was a true role model for our kids [whenever he wasn’t arguing with umpires]. The team as a whole just looked just solid with his presence. Gary last argued with the umpires back in 2011, before becoming a father like many of us do (or don’t) and deciding his lengthy commute from the Land of the White Stiletto just wasn’t worth the effort anymore.

Another of the Mander clan, is there no end to them? Ben’s cousin James played six games for The Jude during the 2001 season, before getting sick of England and going back to Australia. He once opted out of an important Jude fixture at noon on Sunday in order to “go and get a haircut.” A very useful all-round athlete who underachieved in scoring 23 runs at 4.60 and taking 3 wickets at 28.67.

Antony G. Mann is the greatest bowler who EVER bowled for The Jude or The MAD, because pie-chuckers weren’t considered legitimate bowlers in his eyes. Bowling is all about the art of control and swing, not about lobbing flan in the air against pissed unsuspecting batsmen. He is also the greatest batsman The Club has ever had too, certainly at #11. This wasn’t his decision to bat at that position you understand, but more the Skipper reasoning you’d get less of an argument out of the lackadaisical Ant.

So long the integral heartbeat since The Club’s early years, Antony’s infectious sarcasm and no little enthusiasm remained a constant. An acutely intelligent man, his astute observations and dry wit would supply the ink for a legacy of wonderful match reports, and indeed the inner workings of the two MAD forays into the world of the published. It is worth noting of course, that Ant loved nothing more than a good punch up at one of his own book launches.

In 2012, Ant made a brief pilgrimage from the Blue Mountains in Sydney to the greens of Oxfordshire, where he was picked for a succession of rained off MAD matches and enjoyed every minute of his stay. He also failed to take a wicket, but once again proved his geriatric motions hadn’t compromised his bucket like hands.

Mr R. Mather’s sole game for The MAD in 2010 is legendary. After exuding pre-season enthusiasm at nets and ponying up for his new club kit, Ross’ debut didn’t go quite according to plan. He grassed a sitter, registered a golden duck and then had his Vespa break down on the way home. He was never seen again….

If you ever read this, Ross – give it another whirl, huh? Besides, we’ve still got your club apparel you paid for, and you’ve subsequently become a legend.

Andrew’s legendary status only grows with time, especially for those who actually remember him. He debuted back at turn of the Millennium, amazing everyone with his all-round ability at drinking. In fact, his drinking was the very reason The Club finally decided to get insurance, with balls whistling past his ears at square leg most Sundays without Andy registering.

An award-winning poet, Morlers was surprisingly sprightly in the field for a man pronounced dead through inebriation. He could also occasionally produce a cameo with the bat too, well he did once anyway – and those who bore witness will never forget it. Neither will Milton CC, as the previously unbeaten visitors watched agog as half a bottle of vodka and four cans of extra strong lager spanked them to all parts.

Andrew disappeared from the scene some years ago, last spotted drinking at Horspath CC one Sunday. Along with some quite superlative poems, his legacy is truly defined by his ‘MAD Top Trump’ card [see the ‘Glossary’] which boasts the BEST ‘Drinking Ability’ of any other player in MAD History. EVER. PERIOD.

A friend of Thornton Smith, Sami only played a couple of games for The MAD, helping to fill a hole for a pair of midweek slogfests back in 2016. Whimsical and clearly astute, he amused everyone with his homage to Ian Leggate with his less than exemplary fielding. He is however, remembered as being a pretty handy bowler, but his batting credentials will remain forever an unknown.
