John Nash guested for The MAD against Marlingford CC in their final Tour match in Norfolk in 2012. Sociably endearing like most of his regular teammates, John demonstrated the composed art of off spin with 2-0-8-0, experience with the bat in scoring a single, and no little patience with putting up with the histrionics of a bunch of pissed tourists.

Profile: Pithy, competitive and exuding a malevolent sarcasm bordering on rude, the brickbat Mr Newman-Robson is famous as that guy who took the four-trick at Jordan Hill. Yep, that is FOUR WICKETS IN FOUR BALLS and don’t you forget it. He’s also famous for succeeding in successfully transferring a nickname nobody really understands from a previous Club to this and let’s not forget his kudos at Sambuca addled arm-wrestling. Jon has always been considered an opening bowler even though he began life as a very accomplished wicketkeeper. Problem here is that the Club already have twenty keepers, so just take the new cherry Jon and shut the fuck up. Over the years he has carried the burden of throwing things down at the decent batsmen, without ever once mumbling some sarcy disparity under his breath. He can also bat a bit.

Pithy Remark: Jon likes breaking Spam’s ribs.

The Jude’s only regular female player from back in the day, and not a lesbian. Clare was an Oxford Blue with a classical batting style who scored 28 runs in 15 games at an average of 2.80. She also caught a couple. Clare eventually married Julian and went to Australia with Buzz and Lucy. We miss you too, Clare.

Chuck Berry – “My Ding a Ling”

Caustic and trenchant, Parky the Lincoln hypochondriac is a living paradox. An outstanding gentlemanly exterior is forever fighting the unruly yob within, or is it the other way around? A man of consistently humourous and shockingly dry, intellectual barbs, Steve has always had a magnetic aura about him. IT contractor, suave businessman, shit-shovelling farmer – he’s done it all and he’s done it with aplomb.

Born into a farming community, he honed that aloof and risible arrogance from his time spent in France. That veneer was tarnished soon after joining The MAD however, following several displays of pique and the use of his bat as a javelin. He claimed fatherhood smoothed his edges, but we begged to differ. Shake Steve’s hand and that contemptuous sneer we all came to love would be betrayed by his eyes.

Steve has been largely absent in recent years, but that might have something to do with his living hundreds of miles away in Lincolnshire. He’s still playing cricket of course, reckons he’s a batsman now and has threatened to return to play another game or two?

The Team Captain of the 2001 season who fled the country after a disappointing season with the bat. A talented professional violinist and true raconteur, Leo top-scored with 44 not out and in 16 matches compiled 213 runs for Jude and MAD at a very respectable average of over 15. Leo is sorely missed.

An early member of The Jude who played 10 games before not playing any more. He once hit 9 not out against someone. Sam ran the bookshop on Walton Street, Jericho (above) – then suddenly, one day, he didn’t. He now lives somewhere off the Cowley Road. That or he doesn’t.

Stevie Wonder – “I Just Called to Say I Love You”

A gentle and considered soul, Matt was on the periphery of the team since being sentenced to death on his debut back in 2014. Believed to be an opener in the making, Team MAD watched agog as he wandered naively out to the middle against a Horspath CC firing squad. His bloodied remains were carried off the field and laid to rest by a copse of trees, with his team [mates] left pondering whether the guy purporting to be Matthew really is his ghost? Sometimes you never come back from an experience like that….

Virtually nothing was ever known about Mr Reading other than he got hitched in America, made the odd appearance for the UOCC and appeared out of nowhere aka stablemate Lord Lucan. So, maybe that’s it? He was Lord Lucan and Lord Lucan was nothing of the sort? Well, if that’s true, who the fuck is the other bespectacled chap with the nickname of Lucan…? Someone definitely killed that nanny….

Abba – “Super Trouper”

A sprightly medium pace bowler for Wallingford CC, Quintin was persuaded to come to pre-season nets and cause a schism in The Club by knocking Andrew Darley’s head off. Following the acrimonious fallout, it would take a further year or so before he was coaxed into making his debut for The MAD, a nice gentle loosener against Oxford’s Premier League outfit Horspath CC. Quintin didn’t knock any more heads off that day, and he didn’t take any wickets, but he did woo the hosts enough for them to want to make him their new oversees signing. He made a robust 5 with the bat and also a took a catch.

A product of a hard-nosed South African upbringing, Quintin is a gentle and considered soul off the pitch, trying to forget an ancestral past of barred windows, carjacking’s and routine rape and violence. Alas, his naivety of Oxfordshire found him settling in Didcot to start a family, where he now puts up with smashed windows, carjacking’s, routine rape and violence.

Bon vivant friend to pub landlord Noel Reilly and club founder Eddie Lester. Nigel accidentally played for The MAD on the 2002 Tour to Cornwall, scoring 2 not out against the surly opposition, but is better known for hosting The Jude Tours to Weymouth in 1999 and 2000; which thanks in large part to his efforts turned out to be the memorable weekends they were. Unlike the trip to Cornwall which was utter shite.

Hugo eventually made his debut for The MAD in 2013, following lengthy contractual talks in Oxford pubs with Club Recruitment Officer, Ian Leggate. Clearly blessed with cricketing nous from his schooling days, Hugo looked adept at the crease with no little assurance given the crappy old bat he used. Alas, with close friend Ian’s departure to Canada, Hugo subsequently disappeared off the scene. A murder mystery thriller in the making?

James was generous enough to deputise for The Club towards the close of season 2011, stepping effortlessly out of his Bodleian CC attire to that of The MAD. A proven all-round cricketing talent, his catch off the bowling of Mr C. D. Roberts (Tall Bob) is perhaps the ‘tallest’ combined wicket The Club has ever known. James also notched an enterprising 11 with the bat and threw down 2 useful overs with the ball.

Mr Shaw Snr has guested in recent times as father to the hugely talented Dan Shaw. We hope to see them both again in coming seasons.

You see he played for that other pub team [the Marlborough House] and they really were a bunch of wankers. Not that they are anymore, because they don’t exist and neither does the pub, sadly. So, Mark along with anyone who could play cricket, or couldn’t, buggered off somewhere else….

Fast forward to 2014 and a chance encounter with another wanker, Ian Howarth, would see the capricious Mr Shelley finally don The MAD whites – just like his old stablemate Mr. Reeves did back in 2006. He managed just the two matches as it turned out and was largely unrecognisable from the loud and vociferous rabble rouser of yore.

Mr Small was the first and only cartoon character to ever have represented The MAD. Nothing could knock Adie’s unbridled enthusiasm and optimism when he took to the pitch, despite batting always proving an alien concept. He did however enjoy many successes with his bowling, his fervent celebrations likened to that a footballer scoring at Wembley.

Scooping the Clubman award in 2007, many believe it may have had something to do with Mr Small’s voluptuous appetite – as he never once left the tea-ladies with the burden of discarding any unwanted food. Adie left to pursue a career at Disneyland in the fall of 2008, we wish him well.

Profile: Capricious, comical and idiosyncratic, the maverick and loquacious Mr Smith was a beating heart of The Club since the early days when The Jude were The MAD. A loyal and trustworthy friend, a great man in a tight corner and someone who would do anything for you in times of need. At the same time, he realised that was no reason to be spared from essential piss taking and withering barbs. He was also a man of a million different business enterprises, specialising in everything wood from fencing to cabinet making, shelving and door hanging, interior and exterior decorating and a complete recreation of the Death Star in seasoned oak. A classically wired contradiction in terms, 410’s alternative take on cricket saw his Skippers increasingly turn to his bowling over time. He could bat too, of course he could, but he was much more successful bowling pissed beamers than whacking pissed cover drives. Hopefully see him on the field sometime in the future?

Pithy Remark: 410 loves a good auction and retelling a story he’s cunningly stolen from you.

Vicki Howarth, formerly Vicki Stone, became the third female to play for The Club, and enjoyed all the perks and advantages you would expect from being the then Skipper’s [Ian Howarth] better half. She diligently washed his cricket whites, massaged his bunion, and even tried to look interested whilst listening to his post-match blatherings. Following his sacking, her love of turning up on Sundays quickly faded, as she found sunbathing in the back garden with a decent book for company an unequivocally more fulfilling experience.

Despite guesting on a few Club Days, Vicki only played in one Sunday game proper, where nobody explained where any of the fielding positions were and where nobody told her how to bat [or use a back lift]. Her ‘Duck on Debut’ lasted just 5 balls but did however coincide with a certain John Harris taking a remarkable 7 for 5, so her name will be engrained on that famous scorecard forever.

Sandra became the fourth female to play for The MAD in 2011, after her future husband, Ian Leggate, coerced her into making up the numbers for an away trip to Appleton CC. Canadian by birth, Sandra’s laid-back demeanour and jolly naivety made her an instant hit with her team mates. She saw off 9 balls in joining the illustrious list of ‘Ducks on Debut’, fielded without fear, but has now sadly returned to Canada with Ian.

A veteran of 17 games up until the end of 2001, Mike started shakily with many scores under 1 (somewhat less than his professed youthful average) until finding his feet and finishing with a high score of 44 and an average of 10.56. Mike was often completely pissed before, during and after games, which, while seeming to help his own performance, was not very good for anyone else’s. Mike was also a useful change bowler who could land the ball on a length, especially when pissed. Someone once saw Mike not pissed somewhere, but then it turned out to be someone else. He took 14 wickets at 21.71 before heading up to Manchester with his girlfriend to get pissed.

A precocious young quickie who was young and quick, but not as quick as he thought he was, and hence, not so precocious. He found it hard to take batting seriously, but took 18 wickets in 12 matches at 13.50 with best figures of 4-11 against The Brewers XI in Weymouth, 2000. Greg went away to university in Nottingham.

A founding member of The Jude, Fred was an imposing spin bowler who was usually to be found at mid-on hoiking his cricket pants up to his neck. A mainstay of the team for 12 games – far too few – Fred averaged a disappointing 2.56 with the bat, but was an important partnership-breaking bowler and took 10 wickets at 36.10, including a 5-for against The Beehive in 1998 – exactly half of his career wickets for The Club. Fred’s son, James, also played twice for The Jude.

Fred disappeared to live in Witney many years ago.

Adam was yet another player who gravitated to The MAD from corporate behemoth, Centrica (read British Gas). A youthful guile and wit accompanied a boundless enthusiasm, very much in stark contrast to that of the old fuckers in the team. In his limited appearances, Mr Ward’s talent for the sport was ably demonstrated with an average of 16.56 with the bat, 5 catches in the field, and by shouting “liking that!” for each delivery from the opening bowlers. It is just a real shame he gravitated up north so soon after joining.

Profile: One of the more wonderful occasions in recent MAD times, was seeing our ex-skipper (Martin) being superseded by his kids. Debuting in 2019, young Daniel demonstrated all the talents his dad failed to boast, being that he could bat, he could field and didn’t suffer from the yips when bowling. We hope he inches more into being a club regular one day, as his innings of 72 only narrowly missed out on being a club T20 batting record.

Pithy Remark: Daniel enjoys running Spam out.

Profile: The younger of the two Westmoreland brothers, Joe would also make his debut in 2019 at Harwell, giving everyone a timely reminder of how their own abilities have waned and how youth will have its day. Keeping adroitly to the garbage thrown down at him, young Joseph has also demonstrated a steely resolve with the bat. Aside from being a handy option with the ball, his real accolade though must surely be when he turned his back on his dad a few years ago whilst going for a quick single at Horspath CC, Martin imploding with a calf strain in trying to head back. Oh, the laughter….

Pithy Remark: Joe enjoys ignoring his dad’s quick singles.

Profile: Forthright and sardonic, Martin’s keen sense of wit has helped to soften his hard northern edges over the years. He is considered by his peers to have been one of THE cornerstones of The MAD, a key and instrumental figure who helped breathe life into an ale(ing) pub team all those years ago. At one point or another, Mooman has done everything, and only right that someone regarded as the scrupulous definition of a true Clubman became the first Director of Cricket – a hallowed Committee position bestowed on someone who does fuck all (other than order some new hoodies and hats occasionally). With over 4,000 MAD runs to his name and a couple of slogs that bore tons, Moo slowly slid into the periphery as family time became more demanding and the sporting talents of his boys were realised. We hope he might guest in the future at some point, he’s dearly missed. So, who knows, huh?

Pithy Remark: Behind his missus, Martin is the fourth best cricketer in the family.

Like his compatriot John Nash, young Jamie guested for The MAD against Marlingford CC in their final Tour match in Norfolk in 2012. He will be remembered for notching the third top score with the bat (19), bowling more overs than anyone else, and taking the only Marlingford wicket to fall as they chased down 178 for victory. He deservedly scooped the MOTM award and deservedly gets his place on this website. Jamie will now be about 7’ tall no doubt.
